Google Chrome – First Impressions

3 09 2008

So, it has arrived.

Google Chrome.

I downloaded it today, and have installed it.  It’s what I’m using to write this blog.

My first impressions:

I’m certain I haven’t seen them all, but I love the features like:

Neat & Uncomplicated
As a user, I like uncluttered work spaces, and this is very compact and neatly organised with a minimalist approach to buttons and “browser menu” bars.

This is a big (in my opinion) improvement on the multitude of “File” “Edit” “View” approach of IE 6 & IE7.

VS

Recent Browser History displayed as mini webpages, easy navigational reference for a guy that usually has x10 tabs running at once:

Passwords: a nifty tool that enables you to view all your website URL and Usernames, and get the passwords for each if you need them.  Goodbye “Forgotten Password”! Yay!

Secure Site Warning: this is common these days, I just like the little “red cross out” Google Chrome uses…it’s just neat!

Ingognito Mode: Something that Safari already has, but still a feature which I do like so that when I’m looking a Seek or The Big Chair and other job websites, then nobody will know about it.

Anyway, so far I’m loving the new Chrome, and will use it over the next few weeks reviewing all types of website around the globe (as I do) as well as testing our own sites and web systems to ensure they’re all rendered properly…

I’ll update in about a week or so, with feedback from users and developers across Australia from large to small digital agencies, clients and digital media companies.

Good News for Developers

Looks like Developers can relax about rendering issues for a new browser, read here.

Robbery Idea: Update

7 05 2008

A few posts ago, I was on my soap box about a top Web2.0 idea I had for reducing home break in thefts et al.

I’ve created a basic website IA for the idea (see PDF file 268kb size) stolenpropertyiaconceptv10b for this idea, see attached and let me know what you think.

Also, created a basic brand (see below) for the site, a full design will be coming soon, which I intend on applying to the IA and producing a mock-presentation site to show off to anyone who will listen.

Will aim to talk to the MP of my area (Tanya Plibersek) whom I’ve already emailed (and got a reply from the office of Commissioner of Police, Mr Andrew Scipione so clearly Tanya’s office has flipped it on which is a solid).

Also looking to approach and discuss the idea with Insurance Companies (need to send it to the NRMA Claims person, see where it goes from there) and finally Crime Stoppers but I’m yet to ID a person in there (know anyone?).

More soon when things have progressed a bit.

Acknowledgement re online website – reducing home robberies

Dear Mr Sheridan,

Thank you for your recent email to the Commissioner of Police, Mr Andrew Scipione dated 1 May 2008, regarding your ideas for an online website aimed at reducing the incentives and financial reward outcomes for criminals involved in residential robberies. Commissioner Scipione has asked that I acknowledge receipt of your correspondence on his behalf.

Your enquiry has been referred to the Commander, Policy and Programs, for the attention of the Crime Prevention Team, for further enquiry. A more detailed response will be forwarded to you at the completion of those enquiries.

Yours sincerely,

Michelle Funston

Arc@UNSW: Update

10 01 2008

Success.

The board loved the new IA:

Arc IA Home Page

and initial creative:

Arc@UNSW Home Page initial creative.

The site will have a number of key new functions (see current site here) such as:

  • Membership section (with restricted content)
  • E-commerce (membership payments)
  • Custom navigation: use of combined smh.com.au slider and bbc.co.uk (new) allowing site users to add up to x6 sections, sub-sections or individual pages to “their” primary navigation…this, I believe, is the way of the future for large content sites (not inclusive of news sites though, they’re different).
  • Calendar of Events: filtered based on the section of the site that the user is in.
  • Middle Content Tabs: up to 6 CMS controlled content tabs, allowing “summary” of sectional content to be displayed, encouraging membership acquisition.

Inside, members will have access to an Online Shop, be able to download video/music content from events at the UNSW “Roundhouse” Venue from bands and the like (engaging content) and soon be able to listen to the UNSW Student Radio streamed via the web (potentially tie in later with the curriculum of the “Media” degree.

Now for the fun part: We have to the 3rd March to deliver…going to be busy!

Next entry I will (depending on NDA or other commercial restrictions) give an overview of the LJHooker processes and how we got to where we are today.

Arc@UNSW Pitch

10 01 2008

We’ll it’s nearly time for me to go into the Board at the UNSW and deliever the outcomes, IA, spec and budget for their brand new Student Union website….6pm is delivery time!

Since the end of 2006, compulsory student unionism was abolished, so they’ve been busy through 2007 turning themselves into a commercial operation, based on membership.

2008 is all about acqusition, getting new members to pay yearly membership fee’s.

As part of this, their new site will need to be hot, and have engaging content suitable to the late teen/pre-full time work demographic (i.e. Students!).

Later this week I’ll talk through the process we went through to get to where we are,

I think starting with the freshest project for this blog would be a good idea, don’t you?

Then later, we can look at the LJHooker.com and LJhooker.com.au process…which is ongoing.

The current site is here.
